Incredible Salisbury Steak


Oh. My. God. I don't know what to say about this recipe other than I'm absolutely in LOVE with it! The 15th was the Man's birthday, and I wanted to make him happy and treat him to a really good dinner. Well, I definitely succeeded! This is the tastiest dish I've had in a loooong time. It was so tender, and so full of flavor... I'm drooling now thinking about it! When I first saw this recipe I knew I wanted to try it just for the Man. See, he loves something called greasy bread, it's buttered bread soaked in meat drippings. Sounds kinda weird, but it is oh-so-good. Well, this salisbury steak is prepared and served on top of toasted cheese bread and drenched with gravy. I saw it as a delicious new take on an old favorite of the Man's. And he sure did love it! We each had one serving and devoured a second one. It didn't take long to decide that this is a recipe that is sure to stay in our family for years to come! :)




Salisbury Steak-

makes about 5-6 patties


Ingredients-
Patties-
1lb ground beef
1/3 cup minced onions
1/4 cup cracker crumbs, or bread crumbs
1 egg, slightly beaten
1 1/2 Tbsp prepared horseradish
1 tsp salt
1 tsp pepper
3-4 Tbsp butter

Gravy-
1 onion, sliced into rings
1 tsp sugar
2 cups beef broth
1 Tbsp garlic, minced
1 Tbsp tomato paste
1/2 tsp dried thyme leaves
2 Tbsp flour
1/4 cup dry red wine, or red cooking wine
Parmesan cheese, for garnish
Minced parsley, for garnish

Cheese toast-
3-4 Tbsp butter
French/Italian bread cut into 1½-inch thick slices
Grated cheese for topping


Directions-
For the steak-
Combine ground beef, minced onions, cracker crumbs, egg, horseradish, salt and pepper. Shape into oval patties.

Heat butter in a skillet. Cook patties until they are no longer pink inside, about 7-8 minutes on each side. Remove from pan; set aside. (You can grill them instead, if you want!)

For the gravy-
Add onions and sugar to the pan and sauté for about 5 minutes. Stir in garlic and tomato paste. Sauté for 60 seconds or until paste is browned. Sprinkle the onions with flour and cook for another 60 seconds.

Stir in beef broth, wine, salt and thyme. Return your patties to the pan and simmer for 10 minutes while you prepare the cheese toast.

For the cheese toast-
Preheat oven to 300°F. Melt butter in a skillet over medium-high heat.

Add bread, sliced side down, and cook on both sides until golden and toasted. Top with shredded cheese and place on cookie sheet in oven til cheese is melted.
Serve patties on top of cheese toast and top with sauce, onions, fresh parsley and parmesan cheese.
